The time has come; you’re ready to deal with those spider veins, varicose veins or other problems related to vein disease. You want to make the right choice, but it’s confusing. Just what is a vein specialist, anyway? Here are some tips from TriCity Cardiology Consultants.

So What’s a Vein Specialist?

Vein specialists are physicians, which means they are medical doctors (MD) or doctors of osteopathy (DOs). All attend medical school and residency, and usually complete a specialty fellowship for additional training. All must be licensed to practice, and most are board certified. The term vein specialist, however, has no formal meaning, which may contribute to the confusion.

Vein Doctors and Medical Specialties

A vein specialist might be a cardiologist, a radiologist or a vascular surgeon. Cardiologists get their initial training in internal medicine and then complete specialty training in cardiology, the medical specialty that deals with heart and blood vessel disease. Radiologists train in the use of imaging techniques like conventional X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CT scans to diagnose and treat disease. Interventional radiology is a sub-specialty of radiology; these doctors actually treat problems like varicose veins with medications or other techniques in combination with imaging. Vascular surgeons specialize in surgical techniques for blood vessels.

Making the Right Choice

Beyond the basics of training, licensure and board certification, when you choose a vein specialist, there are three main considerations. First, do you have a problem that can be handled medically, or is surgery required? Cardiologists and interventional radiologists don’t perform surgery. If you have a very large varicose vein that has developed ulcers, you probably need a vascular surgeon. Second, how experienced is the doctor? Technical skill is the result of practice, so a doctor who regularly performs procedures or surgery is more likely to be an expert. Finally, how well do you “fit” with the vein specialist? Are you comfortable asking questions? Do you feel safe? No matter how technically competent your doctor is, if you have a personality mismatch, it will affect your relationship and may make for an unhappy experience.
